Managing Personalised Content Notification Topics

Understand how to create the topics subscribers choose to receive personalised notifications on

How are topics formed?

Topics are produced by amalgamating separate categories under one umbrella topic. You can create these yourself and having control over topic composition enables you to proactively create specialist topics linked to current events or upcoming publications you may want to promote.

To start creating topics, go to Admin>Site Adminstration>Topics and click the green 'Add Topic' button in the top-left corner. From here you can start testing different category combinations to create relevant, valuable topics.

Topics can be formed from sub-categories of the same top-level category or from across different top-level categories.

An example of this concept within the same top-level category:

Topic: UK Economy

Categories this topic comprises of:

  • Top-level category: UK Consumer Habits
  • Sub-categories: UK Grocery Sales, UK Electrical Goods Sales and UK Travel Spending Forecasts

When subscribers choose to follow a certain topic, they will receive notifications whenever new reports are published that adhere to any one of the sub-categories that make up the followed topic.

Creating topics from across top-level categories

When you select categories from across different top-level categories, notifications will be generated only when the report is found in both top-level categories that make up the topic.

For example, if you had a topic called ‘UK Hot Drink Consumption’ that was made up of the categories:

  • Top-level category 1: Hot Drinks Sub-category 1: Tea Sub-category 2: Coffee
  • Top-level category 2: Countries Sub-category: UK

The follower of this topic would receive notifications for reports which is tagged/categorised under Tea/Coffee AND UK. This means that reports that fall under the UK category but don’t have any relevance to hot drinks are not meaninglessly sent to followers of the ‘UK Hot Drink Consumption’ topic. This applies vice versa with reports covering the hot drinks markets in countries outside the UK.

🔔 Topics can also comprise multiple sub-categories of a single category and don’t need to combine disparate categories.

Once you have set up these topics, it’s time to configure the notifications for accounts and users.
