Site Access

The 'Remember me' Checkbox on The Login Form

Users can select the 'remember me' checkbox on the login form to allow ease of access for subsequent visits

Users can select the 'remember me' checkbox on the login form to allow ease of access for subsequent visits. This will store a cookie on their computer which automatically leaves you logged into the site for the duration that the cookie is valid (default is 30 days).

Ease of access

When a user returns to the site, they won't need to enter login credentials or perform the two-factor verification step (if two factor authentication is enabled).

Why am I being asked to log in every time I come back to the site?

There are a number of reasons that you may still need to log in manually despite having checked the remember me checkbox:

  • The user clicked 'Log out' during the previous visit - if you click log out, the cookie is invalidated. You should leave your browser without logging out.
  • The browser in 'incognito' or 'private' mode - this will mean the cookie isn't stored, so the remember me function won't work.
  • User returned to the site using another browser - the cookie is stored within your browser's files. Returning to the site from another browser will require a manual log in.
  • User returned to the site using another computer - the cookie is stored locally on your computer. Returning to the site from another computer, or a separate profile on the same computer will require a manual log in.
  • Cookies are being blocked  - some browser add-ons or internet security software may block the storing of cookies, which will make this functionality unusable.

How do I change the default cookie duration?

Raise a ticket requesting a change to the remember me cookie, and specify the required new setting. The cookie can be set to expire after anything from 1 day to several weeks/months, but be aware that the longer the duration, there more you reduce the security of your site.
